Holly & Heather’s Helping Hands: Happy Anniversary to our Blog!

It’s our 1 year anniversary of blogging! We’re giving ourselves a big “happy anniversary” this week!

One year ago, when we started to talk about the idea of a blog, we pretty much had one goal in mind: try to help make the world a better place. If we could try to create peace with our words, maybe that could help someone have a better day and put that positivity out into the world.  With that in mind, each week we try to share a thought to that end, whether it is something very concrete, like donating to a charity, or something more of a change in mindset such as, being true to yourself. When you are inwardly happy and peaceful, that comes out to others and it reflects how you deal with many situations in life.

The thought of our mission statement is rewarding to us and our hope is that it is helpful in some small way through all the challenges life brings.  It’s constantly a work in progress but with each blog, we’ve tried to focus on something positive and uplifting – a helpful hint!  We hope you are enjoying reading our blog as much as we are enjoying writing it!

Holly & Heather’s Helping Hands: Handling Tough Times

We all receive bad news from time to time. Even hearing of unfortunate events on the news can really trouble us. But what if it’s the kind of news that is very personal and very devastating. How do you handle it? Sadness…anger…acceptance…most of us go through these stages. But we have two great role models in our family who have both had health issues and have seemed to find other ways to focus their attention: humor and optimism.

It is amazing what humor can do to a room full of sad people. It is lightening and uplifting. And optimism is similar. It shifts the focus from depression and despair to hope and the future. The concerns are still there and they may be for a long time…even a lifetime. But when you mix in a bit of what our relatives have discovered, they make the sadness a little bit brighter.

This blog is dedicated to our Dad & Uncle Peter; we love you more than you know.

Holly & Heather’s Helping Hands: Aging – It’s Inevitable

So you’re going along fine one day, bend down to pick something up off the floor and your back twinges so painfully that it hurts to stand. Or maybe you’re walking up the stairs and the house is real quiet and you hear this squishing sound that seems to be coming from your knees. What about that slight pain in your shoulder when you’re just lifting your fork to eat and after a few days it’s so bad that you have a frozen shoulder and can’t lift your arm.  Guess what, we are all aging!

Of course any change in your health should be taken seriously and be checked by a doctor. But here’s the thing; what if you’re completely healthy and all of the aches and pains are just a by-product of aging?  It’s a harsh realization to some.  All of our parts can’t last forever, things just seem to wear out after a while. When you’re young you can take a fall and get right up as if nothing happened. When you get past 40, forget it. You just don’t bounce back as before.

We all know the secrets to aging healthfully: good diet, exercise, sleep, etc. Even if you are doing all of those things, you are still going to age. In a way, it takes a little paranoia out of the equation.  It’s a benign answer to some nagging questions about little things that may be changing in your body. It also awakens you to the fact that as time marches on, you are getting older.  It brings us back to an earlier blog, celebrate each day. Live in the present. Do good.  Here’s to aging! May your aches, pains & creaks be few and far between!

Holly & Heather’s Helpful Hint: Spring Cleaning, It’s Good for the Soul!

It’s a great time of year to throw open the windows and air out your home – not just from the dust bunnies winter has left but also for a fresh clean de-cluttered feeling in your heart.  We both tackled a some big clean-out projects recently that have been bugging us for a long time.  While some of those projects are still a work in progress, its feels so good to get rid of things you no longer need or want.  We are constantly reading tips for organizing, cleaning and ways to scale back on your stuff, so we thought we’d inspire you with some of our favorite hints to get a start as well!

* When sorting through clothes, shoes, toys, kitchen gadgets, linens, etc., make 3 piles: Keep, Donate, Throw Away.  If you have a hard time with the “throw away” pile, have someone help you.  Sometimes, if you are really on the fence about getting rid of something, it helps to put the items in a box and stash it in the basement or garage.  If you don’t miss it or even think about it, than you probably don’t need it.  Besides, who wants to bring a sweater back into the house after it has been in the garage and chance a cobweb or bug on it!

*  Make sure all items have a place.  Long ago we decided toys did not need to be in our living rooms when our kids got older.  Give everything a proper home.

* Try to take care of one small cleaning project everyday.  It can be as simple as cleaning off your bathroom sink.

* Get others to pitch in.  If the basement is full of everyone’s stuff, have each person tackle one area or their box of items.

* Designate a bin for keepsakes, we all have our memories and things we no longer need but just can’t part with!

Emotionally, you feel lighter when you don’t constantly see that pile of papers staring at you everyday.  It really frees up your mind to focus on things you enjoy doing.  We love the feeling of a cozy, welcome home to settle into.  That peaceful feeling is one more step in the grand scheme of things to help you carry out goodness into the world.
