Holly & Heather’s Helpful Hint: Celebrate Life!

Remembering our Uncle Peter, part two….

Last week we wrote about losing our Uncle Peter to pancreatic cancer. We would like to dedicate this blog to his memory and focus on celebrating his life.

Uncle Peter was a powerful male role model for us growing up and loved to have a great conversation with a good cup of coffee.   When we spoke of starting this blog almost two years ago, he was very encouraging.  He was excited to read about whatever we were writing about and loved a good dialogue.  He had such incredible knowledge about a wide variety of topics and had very researched opinions (see 8/8/13 Be Kind to Animals & 3/7/13 Internet Protection for Kids).  Our Uncle Peter was one of our biggest supporters, always commenting on our topics with either insight, humor or love.  His last comment dated this past January 9th is hard for us to read today.  He was always in our corner.

So in his memory, we would like to share a quintessential “Uncle Peter” story.  It speaks to his jovial spirit and we hope that, whether you knew him or not, you enjoy it. And remember to cherish each day of your journey…..

It was sometime in the mid 80’s and Hurricane Gloria was about to rip thru Long Island.  Uncle Peter, our aunt and cousins headed over to our house because they didn’t have a basement and we all thought it would be safer if we had to go underground.  After they arrived, we were standing at the front door looking outside as the winds were blowing down power lines and tree branches.  Our dad decided he had to go to work and we were all trying to convince him not to go.  As he headed out into his car, Uncle Peter followed him outside.  He wrapped his arms in a big bear hug around the huge oak tree in our front yard.  He let the wind pick up his legs and he held on, entire body parallel to the ground, huge grin on his face.  He stayed like that for what seemed like minutes as we watched and laughed.  Then Uncle Peter came back into the house with all of us girls, his family, until the storm passed.

Holly & Heather’s Helping Hands: A Time to Mourn….

This week we lost a beloved family member, our Uncle Peter. He was a frequent commenter on our blog and we will miss him beyond words.

More to follow next week when we can collect our thoughts and pay him tribute…..

Holly & Heather’s Helpful Hint: When Life Gives You Lemons….

Things happen. The weather dips (yes, last week it was four degrees in New York). You burn dinner. You face a disappointment. Lose your job. You get sick, really sick. How do you cope through the setbacks, the heartaches, the trying times?

Instead of turning your “lemons” into lemonade…how can you appreciate the lemon itself?  Are there any positive things you can glean from your situation no matter how awful it may be?  Has a trying time brought you closer to a friend or family member?  Has a relationship that dissolved brought you some semblance of peace or closure?

Sometimes you just have to put one foot in front of the other. You work through it. You pray for the strength and keep going. Building a support system, even if it’s only one other person, is a must have. We all need that partner in crime; someone with whom we can literally trust with our lives. And we breathe. It seems simple but is so necessary. Focus and concentrate your attention on your breath. In and out. It helps more than you may think.

Holly & Heather’s Helpful Hint: New Year, Fresh Start

Do you like that picture?  It’s a clean slate, a fresh start.  Each brand new year usually has lots of people making resolutions. We know them well; exercise more, eat better, save money. We have decided not to make any resolutions that will probably get broken anyway but to pick one thing that will help us continue in the mission of this blog: be kind no matter what.

We’ve blogged about it before and we always try to stay true to the reason we started this blog; to help make this world a better place. Why then is it hard to constantly keep this resolve? Life happens; things get in the way of staying focused on what is important.  Maybe a stranger said something nasty to you at work, perhaps an illness strikes someone very close to you, there could be a myriad of reasons that might make you jaded. Being kind in our daily interactions is difficult in a lot of situations but it is not just a resolution we want to keep for the new year, but one we strive to keep for good.

Here’s a little thing to try.  We all know someone who is not always pleasant. Instead of being tit for tat with that person, try being yourself. We tend to treat others they way they treat us but instead we’re going to try to stay true to ourselves no matter how the other person acts. We don’t advocate being walked all over but rather not letting someone else’s actions dictate how you act.  Don’t go against the friendly, happy, kind person you are (or are trying to be!) just because the other person is not.  Stay true to your core.

Holly & Heather’s Helpful Hint: Simplify in the New Year!

Happy New Year! We hope you have had a joyous start to 2014! Here’s hoping this blog will inspire you to simplify a little as we all begin a fresh start to the new year.

As a relaxing, peaceful way to celebrate the holidays, one of us (Heather) decided not to use her computer for a while.  As a result over 300 emails came in over a couple of days’ time.  Most of them were spam, shopping promotions for material things not needed.  If you get daily emails from stores you don’t even shop in, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on unsubscribe.  It’s that simple and a terrific way to de-clutter your inbox.  Keep only the emails of stores you frequent; inspiring blogs – like ours 😉 and those that remind you of the important things in life.

Let’s make this the year we stay healthy and make positive decisions in our lives.  When we feel good, we do good and that helps make our communities and this world a better place!
