There is so much talk about “living in the moment” and “enjoying the here and now”. This is easier said than done sometimes. It seems that we constantly need to remind ourselves to slow down, stop worrying, enjoy what you are doing right now. Why is staying present so hard to do?
Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, it is tough to remain joyful. Life throws many stressors at us everyday. Sometimes there is grief and pain. But the key to staying happy, even through tough situations, may lie in our ability to stay grounded in the present moment.
So here’s something to try that might be helpful. When you feel anxious, depressed, scared, any emotion that might rob you of your joy, take a deep breath and think, “I am ok right now, right at this very moment.” When you get caught up in thinking about the past, or anxious about what may be in the future, come back to the present and tell yourself that all is well right now, in this moment. It is no good to dwell on what was or what may be. That time is over or may never come. Keep good memories in your heart and live in the present. Sometimes all we can do is put one foot in front of the other and keep walking. And that is ok.
