It can be very disappointing to learn that something you once believed in is not at all as you’d assumed. Looking back, you may ask yourself, “Was it really ever true?” What follows might be a radical shift in thinking, believing or living that can shake us to our core. Maybe you’ve experienced a betrayal or just had flawed vision or learned something new and contrary to what you thought you knew all along. Maybe you are beyond disappointed at your newfound realization; maybe you are devastated. Part of growing up and interacting in the world is understanding that nothing and no one is perfect. Not even ourselves. So how do you handle the situation?
We think, reflecting on what you are feeling is important. Mulling it over, getting to the nitty-gritty of why you are so bothered can help work out any upsetting feelings you may be experiencing. Talking over the situation with someone helpful is also key. You may come to a better understanding or may just feel better for venting. And since it ’tis the season, focusing on what’s real and most important in your life right now, today, can somewhat diminish your disappointment. Moving on, letting go and surrounding yourself with positive people and things and not toxic ones will assist in healing. Give yourself the gift of time to adjust.
